प्रेमचंद के बा’द उर्दू कहानी को नया दिल और दिमाग़ और नई ज़बान देने वाले कहानीकारों में शामिल राजिंदर सिंह बेदी 1 सितंबर, 1915 को लाहौर (पाकिस्तान) में पैदा हुए। लाहौर में पढ़ाई का सिलसिला जारी था कि हालत से मज्बूर होकर पढ़ाई छोड़ी और डाक-ख़ाने में नौकरी कर ली। लिखना उन्होंने कॉलेज के ज़माने से ही शुरूअ’ कर दिया जिससे वो बहुत जल्द कहानीकार के तौर पर स्थापित हो गए। उनका पहला कहानी-संग्रह ‘दान:-ओ-दाम’ 1940 में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसी दौरान उन्हें लाहौर की मश्हूर पत्रिका ‘अदब-ए-लतीफ़’ का संपादक बना दिया गया। 1943 में डाक-ख़ाने की नौकरी छोड़कर लाहौर रेडियो स्टेशन में स्क्रिप्ट राइटर का काम करने लगे। 1947 में विभाजन के कारण लाहौर छोड़ना पड़ा और कुछ दिन इधर-उधर रहने के बा’द जम्मू रेडियो स्टेशन के डायरेक्टर हो गए। लेकिन यहाँ वो बहुत दिन नहीं रह पाए और जल्द ही मुम्बई चले गए और वहीं के हो रहे।
बेदी साहब मुम्बई में साहित्य-साधना के साथ-साथ फ़िल्मों की दुनिया से भी जुड़े रहे जहाँ उन्होंने बहुत सी फ़िल्मों के लिए कहानियाँ, पटकथाएँ और संवाद लिखे और कई फ़िल्मों के निर्देशक और निर्माता रहे। उन्हें साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार के अ’लावा तीन फ़िल्मफ़ेयर अवार्ड भी हासिल हुए। 11 नवम्बर, 1984 को मुम्बई में उन्होंने आख़िरी साँस ली।
