कमाठीपुरा किताब की तमाम कहानियां लेखक ने अपनी पत्रकारिता के दिनों में देखीं, भोगीं और जी हैं। कमाठीपुरा से लेखक ने पत्रिकारिता के दिनों में मुंबई अंडरवर्ल्ड, पुलिस तथा खुफिया विभागों की खूब खबरें हासिल कीं। इसी दौरान लेखक ने यहां मानव तस्करी से बचाव के कई सफल अभियानों में हिस्सा भी लिया।
इस किताब की कहानियां हजारों वेश्याओं और तवायफों के बीच से निकली हैं। समाज की आखिरी पांत में खड़ी इन औरतों-लड़कियों के मैले-कुचैले, बदबूदार, हवा-रोशनी से महरूम कमरों और गलियारों के बीच चंद पल जीते हुए, उनके दुख की गलियों से गुजरते हुए, न जाने कितने किस्से लेखक के दिलो-दिमाग पर छपते रहे। अब किताब के जरिए ये कहानियां साझा की हैं।
इस कथा संग्रह की शुरूआती कहानियां बताती हैं कि गर्म गोश्त की मंडी में हर दिन नए ‘माल’ की आपूर्ति कैसे होती है! कैसे समाज की सताई स्त्रियां इन गलियों में गुम हो जाती हैं। कैसे उनका वजूद मिट जाता है। कल की लक्ष्मियां, प्रियाएं और सरस्वतियां, इन बदकार गलियों में पहुंच कर रोज़ी, मुस्कान या सकीना बन जाती हैं। कैसे ये लड़कियां हर पल गलते हुए, जिंदगी की तमाम खुशियां कुचलते हुए, बस जिंदा रहने के लिए जिंदा रहती हैं।
मुंबई के बेहद मंहगी जमीनों का मालिक कमाठीपुरा महज एक लाल बत्ती इलाका नहीं है, यह कारोबार और लघु कारखानों का भी गढ़ है। दो सदियों पहले जो इलाका हाड़तोड़ मेहनत करने वाले हजारों मजदूरों से भरा रहता था, वही सैंकड़ों वेश्याओं का भी ठिकाना बना।

The stories in the short story collection "Kamathipura" are based on the author's personal experiences as a journalist - things he saw, experienced, and persevered through. The author learned a great deal about Mumbai's underworld, police, and intelligence services while reporting from Kamathipura. The author also took part in a number of effective anti-trafficking activities during this period.
The anecdotes in this book are based on the experiences of thousands of courtesans and sex workers. For a few moments, the author lived among these women and girls, who are at the very edge of society, in their filthy, stuffy rooms and dark hallways, without light or fresh air, and journeyed through the lanes of their suffering, gathering innumerable stories that etched themselves deeply in their memories. Through this work of literature, their narratives have now been revealed.
The preliminary stories in this book show how new "mall" are added to the red light area on a daily basis. They show how socially marginalized women lose their identities and vanish into these streets. In these perverted lanes, hundrades of Lakshmis, Priyas, and Saraswatis transform into Rosy, Muskaan, or Sakina. These girls live only to survive as they steadily deteriorate and crush all of life's joys.
Located atop some of the priciest real estate in Mumbai, Kamathipura is not just a red-light district but also a center for businesses and small-scale industries. This area, which was teeming with thousands of hardworking labors two centuries back, turned into a sanctuary for hundreds of sex workers.
