There was a time when people singing in the “Prabhat Pheri” would pass through every lane and neighborhood each morning. Their collective voices would wake everyone from sleep. People were always curious to know why and what they sang every morning. In those days, many people took part in the Prabhat Pheri. Through these Prabhat Pheri songs, a sense of national feeling was awakened against British rule, so that people would participate in the freedom struggle. Children too would hum, “meri mata ke sar par taaj rahe,” “vijayi vishva tiranga pyara,” and “sar jaye to jaye par azadi ghar aaye.”

Freedom came, and life gradually became normal. The entire country set out on the path of progress. Writers too became absorbed in education.

In 1962, China’s attack on India triggered a wave of anger against China across the nation. Patriotic poems and songs surged powerfully. The writer’s pen also created verses of national devotion, which reached people through public platforms and magazines. After the 1971 Indo-Pak war, everything grew quiet again. During this period, the country’s internal problems came to the fore, and patriotic poems and songs seemed to lose their place, appearing only occasionally here and there. Even in such times, patriotic poems and songs continued to be broadcast regularly from All India Radio stations. These poems and songs, aired by All India Radio, kept resonating in the writer’s ears, and his pen remained continuously creative.

Many songs in this collection have been recorded and broadcast as group songs by the All India Radio choral group. The usefulness and relevance of these songs can be easily understood.

एक वक्त रहा है, जब “प्रभात फेरी” वाले गाते लोग हर सुबह हर गली-मुहल्ले से गुज़रते थे। उनके समवेत स्वरों से सबकी नींद टूटती थी। सबको जानने की उत्सुकता रहती कि वे हर सुबह क्यों और क्या गाते थे! उन दिनों तमाम लोग प्रभात फेरी में हिस्सा लेते थे। उन प्रभात फेरी गीतों से अंग्रेजी हुकूमत के खिलाफ़ राष्ट्रीय भावना जगाई जाती थी ताकि लोग आज़ादी की लड़ाई में हिस्सा लें। उन दिनों बच्चे भी गुनगुनाते थे, “मेरी माता के सर पर ताज रहे”, “विजयी विश्व तिरंगा प्यारा” और “सर जाये तो जाये पर आज़ादी घर आये।” आजादी आई, सब सामान्य हो गई। सारा देश प्रगति पथ पर चल दिया। लेखक भी शिक्षा में मशगूल हो गए।

1962 में भारत पर चीन के आक्रमण से पूरे देश में चीन के प्रति रोष की लहर दौड़ गई।  देशभक्ति कविताओं-गीतों का ज़बरदस्त  उबाल आ गया। लेखक की कलम ने भी राष्ट्र-प्रेम की कविताएं रच डालीं, जो मंचों और पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के ज़रिए लोगों तक पहुँचीं। 1971 के पाक-भारत युध्द के बाद सब शांत हो गया। इस दौरान देश की आंतरिक समस्याएं उभर कर सामने आईं, तो देशप्रेम की कविताएं-गीत जन्म लेना भूल गए। यदा-कदा इधर-उधर किसी मौक़े पर प्रकाशित दिख जाती थीं। ऐसे दौर में भी आकाशवाणी केंद्रों से नियमित रूप से देश-प्रेम की कविताएं और गीत प्रसारित होते रहे। आकाशवाणी में कार्यरत ये कविताएं और गीत लगातार लेखक के कानों में गूंजते रहे, उनकी क़लम भी अनवरत सृजनशील रही।

इस संग्रह के कई गीत आकाशवाणी के कोरल ग्रुप द्वारा समूहगान के रूप में ध्वन्यांकित और प्रसारित होते रहे हैं। इन गीतों की उपादेयता सहज ही समझी जा सकती है।
