About half a century back, author of this book Dr. Kanwarjit Singh Kang began touring far off places of Punjab and Haryana on his motorcycleequipped with an old Yachika camera to photograph and record the paintings made on the walls of buildings, mandirs, samadhs, mazars, deras, shrines, gurdwaras, dharamshalas and bungas etc. where people of different faiths congregated. Half a century back he had the conviction that modernization forces would obliterate these paintings and with also decimate these symbols of syncretic thriving culture where a number of faiths and cultures intermingled. He was true in his assumption and many of the paintings he photographed are alive only in his photos. This book is a systematic record of these photos which have been classified in regions and places. A detailed scholarly introduction gives context and relevance to the work. This book through its pictures gives a look into the history and culture of the last three centuries of the present regions of Punjab and Haryana and provides a rare look into what has been lost forever or is in the process of being lost. This book has been in large format on glossy art paper and is fully illustrated.
