About the Book:-This is the narrative of 2 Lazarist missionaries who were deputed to the petty mission of si-wang in China and were given instructions to go into the heart of Tibet to Lhasa, to ascertain the nature and extent of the Apostolic Vicariat of Mongolia re-established about the year 1844. Their travels took two years, from 1844 to 1846 and they entered in Tibet via its North East borders with China. Passing along the Kokonor the continued South West through the wild Tibetan countryside to reach Lhasa. From there the struck East through central China and then South to reach Macao from where they took the sea route back to Europe. This book is full of amusing and entertaining anecdotes that describe the manner of life of the Tibetan and Chinaman. The routes are colourfully described and give the reader a feel of belonging to the travel. Religious observances, holy edifices, temples and monasteries, are noticed with acute interest and, being missionaries, they never miss to point out how their system is truer than that of the native. A very interesting read. This book is a reprint of the 1898 edition. About the Author:-Évariste Régis Huc, C.M., also known as the Abbé Huc (1813–1860), was a French Catholic priest, Lazarite missionary, and traveller. He became famous for his accounts of Qing-era China, Mongolia (then known as "Tartary"), and especially the then-almost-unknown Tibet in his book Remembrances of a Journey in Tartary, Tibet, and China. He and his companion Joseph Gabet were the first Europeans who had reached Lhasa since Thomas Manning in 1812.Shortly afterwards, he sought the chance to work at the Lazarite mission in China, which had replaced the Jesuits' in 1783. He studied mission work and Chinese at its seminary on Macao under J.G. Perboyre (later martyred and canonized as a saint) for eighteen months. When his Chinese was consider sufficient, he disguised himself for work on the mainland by growing out his hair, cutting it into the obligatory queue, wearing loose Chinese garments, and dyeing his skin to a yellower shade.
