About the Book:-This work is volume XXV of the Sacred Books of the East series. It is translated by Georg Buhler. This work, consisting of one hundred thousand verses, was composed by Pragapati (Brahman) ; it was successively abridged by Manu and others. This account of the origin of our Manu-smriti would have to be slightly modified by those who accept as genuine the verse. which stands at the beginning of the Smriti according to the commentators Govindaraga, Narayawa, and Raghavananda, as well as according to the Kasmir copy and other MSS. As this verse contains an invocation of the selfexistent Brahman, and a promise to explain the laws which Manu taught. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Georg Bühler (1837 –1898) was a scholar of ancient Indian languages and law. He was born to Rev. Johann G. Bühler in Borstel, Hanover, attended grammar school in Hanover, where he mastered Greek and Latin, then university as a student of theology and philosophy at Göttingen, where he studied classical philology, Sanskrit, Zend, Persian, Armenian, and Arabic. In Fall 1862 Bühler was appointed assistant at the Göttingen library; he moved there in October. While settling in, he received an invitation via Prof. Max Müller to join the Benares Sanskrit College in India. In the year 1878 he published his translations of the Paiyalachchhi, the oldest Prakrit dictionary, with glossary and translation.
