About the Book:-It has been deemed advisable so far to depart from the plan of this work, as to postpone the continuation of ‘Lives of the Moghul Emperors’. The more miscellaneous character of the present volume will, however, it is hoped, render it neither less useful nor less generally acceptable than the volumes which have preceded it. Among all the varieties of architecture in the East, few are so imposing, and none so solemn, as the monumental. Both Hindoos and Mohammedans have freely opened their treasures to cover with magnificent structures the ashes of their heroes, and frequently of their relatives. Millions have been lavished upon those proud monuments of departed greatness; which are noble, indeed, but melancholy memorials of the foul dust contained within their shrines, and of the dreadful process of decay which has taken place beneath their towering pinnacles and gorgeous domes. The book is the product of extensive study of these topics. It contains 22 engravings from drawings By William Daniell. Though the book is a rare one, it may be recognized even by those who dissent from the author’s views About the Author :-Thomas Bacon (1711 – 1768) was an Episcopal clergyman, musician, poet, publisher and author. Considered the most learned man in Maryland of his day, Bacon is still known as the first compiler of Maryland statutes. He probably received a very good education for his time, because by the mid-1730s, Bacon lived in Dublin and worked in the royal customs service. He had previously managed vessels in the coal trade between Whitehaven and Dublin. In 1737, Bacon published his first book, A Compleat System of the Revenue of Ireland, in its Branches of Import, Export, and Inland Duties, Containing. An Abridgement of English and Irish Statutes Relating to the Revenue of Ireland II. The Former and Additional Book of Rates Inwards and Outwards, etc. III. A View of the Duties which Compose the Revenue of Ireland, etc. IV. The Method of Making Entries, etc. This earned an invitation for him to become a free citizen of Dublin, with associated privileges.Colonel Philip Meadows Taylor, CSI, an administrator in British India and a novelist, made notable contributions to public knowledge of South India. Though largely self-taught, he was a polymath, working alternately as a judge, engineer, artist, and man of letters.
