Product description
About the Book:-The author is one of the most respected British historians who tried to present, within a small compass, an account of India and her people. It’s his attempt to reconstruct Indian history from its original sources in the fewest possible pages. The materials on which it is based are condensed from the author larger works. It is the sublimate of historical material contained in his monumental “Imperial Gazetteer of India” in 26 volumes (which in itself is the condensed form of the 128 volume Statistical Survey of India, collated by Hunter, again). The book is planned chronologically : it starts with a chapter on the physical and geographical of India and goes on to describe, among other topics : the population, the non-Aryans, the Aryans, Buddhism, the Greeks in India, Sythic inroads, rise of Hinduism, early Muhammadan dynasties, the Mughals, the Marathas, early European settlements and British rule. It then gives information on the commercial aspects, the trade, the mineral resources, means of communication, etc. There are 10 appendices that are primarily population charts and information. This book is a reprint of the 1886 edition. About the Author:-Sir William Wilson Hunter KCSI CIE was a Scottish historian, statistician, a compiler and a member of the Indian Civil Service. He is most known for The Imperial Gazetteer of India on which he started working in 1869, and which was eventually published in nine volumes in 1881, then fourteen, and later as a twenty-six volume set after his death. He reached Bengal Presidency in November 1862 and was appointed assistant magistrate and collector of Birbhum, in the lower provinces of Bengal, where he began collecting local traditions and records, which formed the materials for his publication, entitled The Annals of Rural Bengal, which influenced among others the historical romance Durgeshnandini of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. He also compiled A Comparative Dictionary of the Non-Aryan Languages of India, a glossary of dialects based mainly upon the collections of Brian Houghton Hodgson, which according to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "testifies to the industry of the writer but contains much immature philological speculation".
