The Extras: Ravan aani Edi

जुन्या मुंबई शहराच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर घडणारी ही कादंबरी किरण नगरकरांच्या चित्रदर्शी आणि मिस्कील शैलीमुळे वाचनीय झाली आहे. रावण आणि एडी या दोन नायकांची ओळख यापूर्वी स्वत: नगरकरांनी लिहिलेल्या ‘रावण आणि एडी” या कादंबरीतून वाचकांना झालीच आहे. ‘रावण आणि एडी’मध्ये त्या दोघांची बालपण आणि पौगंडावस्थेतील कथा आली आहे तर ‘द एक्सट्राज’मध्ये त्यांच्या तारुण्यातल्या — सर्वसामान्यांच्या आयुष्यात महत्त्वाचं स्थान असलेल्या नोकरी, करियर, प्रेम, लग्न अशा — अनेक समस्यांवर नगरकर मिस्कील शैलीत भाष्य करतात. याशिवाय कादंबरीत अनेक उपकथानकं आहेत. नगरकरांच्या शैलीतील अतिशयोक्ती क्वचित अवास्तव वाटली तरी मराठीत असं लेखन दुर्लभ असल्यामुळे ती वाचताना आनंद देते. Set against the backdrop of the old Mumbai city, this novel is readable due to Kiran Nagarkar's pictorial and mischievous style. The two heroes Ravana and Eddy have already been introduced to the readers from the novel 'Ravana and Eddy' written by Nagarkar himself. In 'Ravan and Eddy', the story of both of them comes from their childhood and adolescence, while in 'The Extras', Nagarkar comments in a mischievous style on many issues of their youth — jobs, careers, love, marriage, which are important in the lives of ordinary people. Apart from this, there are many subplots in the novel. Although the exaggeration in Nagarkar's style is hardly unrealistic, it is a joy to read as such writing is rare in Marathi.
