अली इमाम नक़वी आधुनिक युग के एक अहम, संजीदा और मह-त्वपूर्ण कहानीकार के रूप में जाने जाते हैं। उनका जन्म 09 नवंबर 1945 को मुंबई में हुआ। वालिद अमीर हैदर ख़ुश-हाल और कारोबारी शख़्स थे। अली इमाम नक़वी भी मैट्रिक तक की शिक्षा के बाद पिता के कारोबार में शामिल हो गये। लेकिन जल्द ही कारोबार से अलग हो कर मुंबई में ईरानी कौंसुलेट में बतौर क्लर्क स्थायी मुलाज़िम हो गये। अली इमाम नक़वी ने 1970 के आस-पास लिखना शुरू किया। 'खुलते हुए बल' उनका पहला अफ़साना है जिसने उन्हें अदब की दुनिया में एक अलग पहचान दी। पहला कहानी संग्रह 'नये मकान की दीमक' 1980 में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसके बाद क्रमवार चार अफ़सानवी मज्मुए 'मुबाहिला' (1988), 'घटते बढ़ते साये' (1993), 'मौसम अज़ाबों का' (1998) और 'कही अन-कही' (2012) प्रकाशित हुए।

His father, Ameer Haider, was a prosperous and well-established businessman.After completing his education up to matriculation, Ali Imam Naqvi joined his father’s business. However, he soon left it and became a permanent employee as a clerk at the Iranian Consulate in Mumbai.Ali Imam Naqvi began writing around 1970. His first short story, Khulte Hue Bal, earned him a distinct identity in the literary world. His first collection of stories, Naye Makaan Ki Deemak, was published in 1980.This was followed by four more short story collections published in sequence: Mubahila (1988), Ghatte Badhte Saaye (1993), Mausam Azaabon Ka (1998), and Kahi Ankahi (2012).
