In this play, Karnada comments on the situation arising on the occasion of the 'Temple' and 'Mandal' movements, using the metaphorical historical context of the upheaval in the socio-cultural life of Karnataka by Basavanna and his followers in the twelfth century and the movement that ended in terrible carnage and bloodshed. As Karnad says in the prologue of this play, looking at the horrors of 1989 and our national life crumbling in the grip of fanaticism, one can see how dangerous it is to ignore the solutions in this regard proposed by these seers in the twelfth century.
