About the Book :- This rare book contains the substance of the Readership Lectures that the author originally intended to deliver at the Calcutta University early in 1920. The honor of a Readership at the university was bestowed upon him, in distinguished company at the instance of the ever-watchful president Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, whose exertions in the cause of Indian history and culture are too well-known and too well-founded to require any commendation from him, owing to official exigencies and ill-health it was impossible that he could carry out his engagement as originally intended. Among a certain number of subjects some contributions of South India to Indian Culture was selected as likely to be more attractive to the Calcutta University; and hence the effort in the book to lay before the public some of the main contributions to Indian Culture which South India could be credited having made in the course of her history. About the Author :- Diwan Bahadur Sakkottai Krishnaswamy Aiyangar was an Indian historian, academician and Dravidologist. He chaired the Department of Indian History and Archaeology at the University of Madras from 1914 to 1929. In 1914, he was made Head of the Department and held this post from 1914 to 1929. Aiyangar was elected a member of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1908 and was conferred a "Diwan Bahadur" title in 1928. He is known for the new methods he introduced in interpreting the history of Vijayanagar. His historical methodology is considered to be Indian nationalistic. He assisted Robert Sewell in his analyses of the epigraphy and archaeology of South India. These publications inspired Aiyangar to make a detailed enquiry into the history of Vijayanagar and by the 1920s, he had published a set of masterpieces on the history of Vijayanagar. His historical methodology was, however, a marked deviation from that of Sewell's and historians who had lived before him.
