About the Book :-The emendations in the present edition refer principally to Kesiraj’s quotations from previous poets. They are based partly on the different readings given in the Appendix to the first edition, but chiefly on a manuscript from Mudabidaru near Mangalore. A loan of this Manuscript on palmyra leaves was obtained through the kind endeavor of the late Dr A. C. Burnell in the year 1872. It is on the whole, a good one; nevertheless it has been impossible to give a few of the quotations, also with its aid, in a correct form. Such doubtful quotations have been marked out with a sign of interrogation in parenthesis, thus? The commentator on Kesiraja’s work in the Mudabidaru manuscript is not Nishthurasanjayya; his name, however, does not appear. Though the wording of his commentary often is different from that of the first-mentioned one’s, the meaning is essentially the same. The Editor believes that the present edition fairly represents Kesiraja’s original, and trusts that all scholars interested in the Kannada language will, therefore, gratefully welcome it. About the Author:-Reverend Ferdinand Kittel was a priest and indologist with the Basel Mission in south India and worked in Mangalore, Madikeri and Dharwad in Karnataka. He is most famous for his studies of the Kannada language and for producing a Kannada-English dictionary of about 70,000 words in 1894. He also composed numerous Kannada poems.
