‘सत्याग्रह’ ही कादंबरी म्हणजे मुळशी सत्याग्रहाचा निव्वळ पंचनामा किंवा दस्तऐवज नव्हे. विकासाच्या बुलडोझरखाली किडा-मुंगीप्रमाणे चिरडल्या जाणाऱ्या हाडामांसाच्या माणसांना आपला समाज कसा वागवतो आणि शेवटी त्यांचा सत्याग्रहदेखील अयशस्वी होऊन त्यांची पूर्ण वाताहत कशी होते, त्याची ही प्रक्षोभक शोकांतिका आहे. आणि या शोकांतिकेतील दृष्ट ग्रह म्हणजे तुम्ही-आम्ही, आपली सरकारे, व्यापारी, उद्योजक आणि आधुनिकतेच्या झगमगाटात मौजमस्ती करणारे सारेच नागरिक. आधुनिक प्रगती आवश्यक आहे, हे खरे. पण मग कादंबरीचा नायक महादेव बोडके आणि त्यांच्यासारखी असंख्य निष्पाप कुटुंबे यांचा बळी देणे अपरिहार्य आहे काय? मावळातले शेतकरी म्हणजे शिवाजीच्या स्वराज्याच्या लढाईत आघाडीवर लढणारे मावळे. त्यांना सत्याग्रहाच्या मार्गावर नेणारे सेनापती बापट, महात्मा गांधी त्यांचा जीव आणि जमिनी तर वाचवू शकले नाहीत, पण मधला मार्ग काढून त्यांना निदान धरणाने निर्माण केलेल्या विजेचा वापर करता येईल, असे किमान प्रयत्न करायला काय हरकत होती? गांधींनी कंपनीला नुसतेच आवाहन केले आणि बापट तुरुंगात गेले. टाटा कंपनीने गांधींना हिंग लावूनही विचारले नाही. The novel 'Satyagraha' is basically not a mere Panchnama or document of Satyagraha. It is a heart-wrenching tragedy of how our society treats mere mortals who are crushed like worms and ants under the bulldozer of development, and ultimately their Satyagraha fails and ends up in complete ruin. And the visible planet in this tragedy is you and us, our governments, businessmen, entrepreneurs and all the citizens who bask in the glow of modernity. It is true that modern progress is essential. But is it inevitable to sacrifice the hero of the novel Mahadev Bodke and countless innocent families like him? Farmers in Mawla are the Mawlas who fought in the frontline in Shivaji's battle for Swarajya. General Bapat, who led them on the path of Satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi could not save their lives and lands, but what was the problem of at least trying to take the middle path so that they could at least use the electricity generated by the dam? Gandhi simply appealed to the company and Bapat went to jail. Tata Company did not even ask Gandhi.
