‘वीर’ सावरकर अब राष्ट्रपिता गाँधी के समतुल्य राष्ट्रीय नेता के रूप में स्थापित हैं, क्योंकि दोनों की तस्वीरें संसद के केन्द्रीय-कक्ष में साथ-साथ टंगी हुई नज़र आती हैं। यह इसके बावजूद है कि गाँधी की हत्या के लिए देश के प्रथम गृहमंत्री सरदार पटेल ने सावरकर को भी ज़िम्मेदार ठहराया था। यह पुस्तक सच्चाइयों को मिथकों से अलग करने का प्रयास है और भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के इतिहास को वास्तविक रूप में सामने रखने की मंशा का नतीजा है। आज़ादी से पहले के असली सावरकर को जानने के लिए लेखक ने हिंदू महासभा, आरएसएस और भारत सरकार के अभिलेखागारों में उपलब्ध दस्तावेज़ों और सावरकर के साथ कालापानी में क़ैद क्रांतिकारियों के संस्मरणों को ही आधार बनाया है। ये सब चकित करते हैं और बताते हैं कि सावरकर ने क़ैद से रिहाई के लिए कम से कम 5 बार रहम की भीख मांगी, वे मुस्लिम लीग की तरह द्विराष्ट्र सिद्धांत में विश्वास करते थे, उनके नेतृत्व में हिन्दू महासभा ने 1940 के दशक में मुस्लिम लीग के साथ गठबंधन सरकारें चलाईं । सावरकर न केवल स्वतंत्रा संग्राम से अलग रहे, बल्कि द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध के दौरान जब सुभाष चन्द्र बोस देश को मुक्त कराने की कोशिश कर रहे थे, उन्होंने खुले तौर पर अंग्रेज़ों की सैनिक तैयारियों में मदद की। वे जातिवाद, नस्लवाद और साम्राज्यवाद के जीवन भर समर्थक रहे, इसे वे ‘हिंदुत्व’ कहते थे । इस पुस्तक में सावरकर द्वारा लिखित हिंदुत्व के 1923 के मूल संस्करण की समीक्षा भी मौजूद है।
