भारतीय मान्यता है कि ब्रम्हा ने ऋग्वेद से शब्द, सामवेद से गीत-संगीत, यजुर्वेद से अभिनय तथा अथर्ववेद से रस लेकर नाट्यवेद की रचना की। यह नाटक दैनिक जीवन में मनुष्य के साथ गहराई से जुड़ा हुआ है। जब तक मानव के पास मन है, आघात-प्रत्याघात का स्पंदन है तबतक मनुष्य के अंदर-बाहर नाटक चलता रहता है। सुख-दुःख, हास्य-रुदन, मिलन-विरह, प्रेम-घृणा, समर्पण ईर्ष्या, दोस्ती-दुश्मनी, आदि अपने-अपने रंग-रूप दर्शाते रहते हैं।

नाटक चाहे अभिजात्य वर्ग के लिए हो या जनसाधारण के लिए लोकनाटक, सबका उद्देश्य होता है मनुष्य के विभिन्न मनोभावों को उकेरना। नाटकीय ढंग से उकेरे गए इन मनोभावों का असर दर्शकों पर कमाल का होता है। दर्शक इसी कमाल के चलते नटों (कलाकारों) के फैन बन जाते हैं।

According to ancient Indian belief, 'Brahma' crafted the 'Natyaveda' by drawing 'words from the Rigveda, melody from the Samaveda, performance from the Yajurveda, and essence from the Atharvaveda'. Drama, thus, is deeply intertwined with human existence, reflecting the very rhythm of life. As long as the human heart beats with the pulse of experience—of impact and response—the stage of life shall never cease its performance. 

Within the theater of existence, emotions weave their eternal play—'joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, union and separation, love and hatred, devotion and envy, friendship and enmity'—each taking on its own shade, its own form.
