राजयोग आठ अंगों में विभक्त है। पहला है यम-अर्थात् अहिंसा, सत्य, अस्तेय (चोरी का अभाव), ब्रह्मचर्य और अपरिग्रह। दूसरा है नियम-अर्थात् शौच सन्तोष, तपस्या, स्वाध्याय (अध्यात्म-शास्त्रपाठ) और ईश्वरप्रणिधान अर्थात् ईश्वर को आत्मसमर्पण। तीसरा है आसन-अर्थात् बैठने की प्रणाली । चौथा है प्राणायाम-अर्थात् प्राण का संयम । पाँचवा है प्रत्याहार-अर्थात् मन की विषयाभिमुखी गति को फेरकर उसे अन्तर्मुखी करना। छठा है धारणा-अर्थात् किसी स्थल पर मन का धारण सातवाँ है ध्यान और आठवाँ है समाधि-अर्थात् अतिचेतन अवस्था। हम देख रहे हैं, यम और नियम चरित्र-निर्माण के साधन हैं। इनको नींव बनाए बिना किसी तरह की योगसाधना सिद्ध न होगी। यम और नियम में दृढप्रतिष्ठ हो जाने पर योगी अपनी साधना का फल अनुभव करना आरम्भ कर देते हैं। इनके न रहने पर साधना का कोई फल न होगा। योगी को चाहिए कि वह तन-मन-वचन से किसी के विरुद्ध हिंसाचरण न करे। दया मनुष्य जाति में ही आबद्ध न रहे, वरन् उसके परे भी वह जाए और सारे संसार का आलिंगन कर ले।
