‘रायगडाला जेव्हा जाग येते’ हे एक ऐतिहासिक नाटक. ऐतिहासिक एवढ्याच अर्थाने की त्यातली नाट्यवस्तू इतिहासातून कोरून काढलेली आहे. समाजजीवनातील अंतःस्रोत जाणून घेण्याच्या दृष्टीने इतिहास महापुरुषांच्या चरित्राकडे काहीशा अलिप्तपणे पाहतो. पण त्या पुरुषश्रेष्ठांच्या अंतरंगातून वाहणारे माणूसपणाचे सूक्ष्म, कोमल, मधुर झरे यांविषयी त्याला फारसे कर्तव्य दिसत नाही. कलासृष्टीचा व्यापार नेमका याउलट आहे. म्हणूनच जिथे इतिहास थांबतो तिथे कलासृष्टीचा शोध सुरू होतो. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज आणि युवराज शंभूराजे ही मराठी मनांची लाडकी दैवते. पण छत्रपतींच्या जीवनातील शेवटची चार वर्षे न्याहाळत असताना या थोर पितापुत्रांच्या आयुष्यात ज्या घडामोडी घडल्या तिथेच काळपुरुषाने एका महान शोकांतिकेचा घाट निर्माण करून ठेवला आहे असे दिसते; आणि ध्यानात येते की अवतारतुल्य कार्य करणारी पितापुत्रांची ही जोडी म्हणजे अखेर ‘माणसे’च होती. त्यांच्या व्यक्तिमत्वांतून आणि विविधरंगी कर्तृत्वातून माणूस शोधण्याचा हा एक हृदयस्पर्शी आणि मराठी नाट्यसृष्टीत जवळ जवळ पहिलाच प्रयोग.
