ABOUT THE BOOK:- The book, “Perspectives on Indian Education” has essays written by the author over a period of several years. It has three sections. The first deals with the long journey that Education took before it became a justiciable right of the people and describes some of the major institutions pertaining to education like the Association of Indian Universities, the University Grants Commission and the National University of Educational Planning and Development. The second section provides insights into some contemporary challenges. Consisting of six chapters, it deals with issues related to globalization and internationalization; the increased demand for higher education; affirmative action; skill development; the rise of private education and the correlation between teaching and research. The final section, consisting of four essays are devoted to some spiritual aspects of education together with the thinking of a few nationalist leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Kavita A. Sharma is currently the President of South Asian University, New Delhi. She taught at Hindu College, Delhi University for about 37 years (1971–2008). She was also a student of the same college and finally served as its Principal for 10years (1998–2008). She was the Director of India International Centre, New Delhi (2008–2014).She is the Life Member of several prestigious associations and institutes including Indian Association for Canadian Studies, Indian Law Institute, Association of Comparative Literature and Indian History Congress. Dr Sharma has been a recipient of Indo-Canadian Shastri Fel lows hiptwice (1991 – 92 and 2002–2003) and has also been awarded the Fulbright Fellowship New Century Scholar (2007–08) for research on ‘Higher Education in the 21st Century: Access and Equity’ by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. She has several published books to her credit, including Internationalization of Higher Education: An Aspect of India’s Foreign Relations (2008), Sixty Years of the University Grants Commission: Establishment, Growth and Evolution (2013), Hindu College, Delhi – A People’s Movement (2014), Windmills of the Mind (2006), Queens of Mahabharata (2006) and Birds, Beasts, Men and Nature in the Mahabharata (2008). She has contributed extensively to research journals. She participates regularly in seminars and conferences in India and abroad on subjects such as higher education, gender issues, diaspora and the Mahabharata.
