Nationalism and Regionalism in India: the Case of Orissa

This study addresses the issues of nationalism and regionalism in the empirical situation of Orissa within the multicultural context of India. By focusing on the Oriya situation the study basically highlights two major forms of conflict-regional nationalism and regionalism in multicultural and/or multinational countries such as India. To differentiate these two forms of conflict the study, as a point of departure, makes a distinction between political nationalism and cultural nationalism.The former is associated with nationalism at the macro-national level and the latter with nationalism at the regional level in multicultural/multinational context. About The Author:- Subrat K. Nanda is currently working as a faculty member in the department of Rural Development and Agricultural Production at the North-Eastern Hill University, Tura campus, Tura Meghalaya. He has obtained his M. Phil. and Doctoral degree in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He joined North-Eastern Hill University in December 1988 and he taught at different campuses of NEHU.
