महाभारताची शोकान्तिका ही तशी आपल्या परिचयाची. पराशराकडून झालेल्या वंचनेचा परिणाम म्हणून तमाम पुरुषजातीचा सूड उगवण्यासाठी, स्वतः च्या मुलास राज्यपद मिळावे या मागणीतून, प्रेमांध शंतनूराजाशी विवाहास तयार झालेली सत्यवती शेवटी निःसत्त्व, निस्तेज मुलांना जन्म देते. त्यांच्या मृत्यूनंतर कुरुवंशाच्या वारसासाठी सत्यवतीला पुन्हा भीष्माकडे याचना करावी लागलेली आहे. परंतु मोडेन पण वाकणार नाही हे भीष्माचे ब्रीद आहे. यातूनच घडते महाभारताची अटळ शोकान्तिका. स्वतः च्या मुलाला राज्यपद प्राप्त व्हावे म्हणून धडपडणाऱ्या सत्यवतीला शेवटी नियोग पद्धतीने कुरुवंशासाठी वारस मिळवावे लागतात. या सर्व व्यथेचे मनोज्ञ दर्शन म्हणजे वसंत कानेटकरांचे मत्स्यगंधा. भीष्मावर झालेल्या अन्यायाची सतत जाणीव आपणास हे नाटक वाचताना होत असते हेच या नाटकाचे मोठे यश आहे.
