About the Book:- Materia Medica is so wide a term that it is difficult to define. Materia Medica proper, sometimes called Pharmacognosy. This is the knowledge of the natural history, physical characters, and chemical properties of drugs. Pharmacy: This is the science and art of the preparation and combination of drugs, so as to render them fit for administration. Pharmacology: This is the science which treats of the actions of drugs on the body both in health and disease. A subdivision of it is Pharmacodynamics, which is the science of the physiological action of drugs in health. The science which studies the effects of doses large enough to endanger life is Toxicology. Therapeutics: It is the science and art of alleviating or curing disease. Many authors do not include this under the term Materia Medica. About the Author:-Sir William Hale-White KBE FRCP (1857 –1949) was a distinguished British physician and medical biographer. He was appointed an Assistant Physician at Guy's Hospital in 1886, a Physician in 1890 and Consulting Physician from 1917. During the First World War he was a colonel in the RAMC and was created KBE in 1919. He was elected president of the Medical Society of London (1920-), the Royal Society of Medicine (1922–1924) and of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland (1930). He was married in 1886 to Edith Fripp the daughter of Alfred Downing Fripp and sister of Sir Alfred Fripp, surgeon to Edward VII and George V. They had three sons: Alfred, Leonard (who died in 1917 when H.M.S. Natal exploded) and Reginald - who became a physician.
