महाभारत या सर्वार्थाने मोठ्या संस्कृत महाकाव्यावर मराठीत विपुल लेखन झालेले आहे. परंतु त्यातले बहुतेक लेखन व्यक्तिरेखांबद्दलचे आहे. सरोज देशपांडे यांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली पुणे शहरात दहा वर्षांपासून आजतागायत महाभारत-वाचनाचा वर्ग चालू आहे. यातल्या सर्वांनाच याहून वेगळ्या लिखाणाची गरज तीव्रपणे जाणवली. वाचनवर्गातील सदस्यांनी सूक्ष्मवाचन आणि सविस्तर चर्चानंतर अभ्यासपूर्ण जाणकारीने लिहिलेल्या विविध अनोख्या आणि दुर्लक्षित विषयांवरील लेखांचा संग्रह प्रस्तुत पुस्तकात केला आहे. महाभारतातील अनेक प्रसंगांतून प्रकटणाऱ्या धर्मजाणिवांची चिकित्सा करणारा माधव देशपांडे यांचा, व्यासांच्या लेखक-पात्र अशा दुहेरी भूमिकेचे विश्लेषण करणाऱ्या वैजयंती शेंडे यांचा स्त्री पात्रांचे आधुनिक नजरेतून केलेले अवलोकन मांडणारा वीणा भावे यांचा आणि बहुपेडी आविष्कार पद्धतींचे विवेचन करणारा मंजूषा गोखले यांचा, असे चार लेख वाचनवर्गाच्या सदस्यांचे आहेत. वर शाप या संकल्पनांचा वेगळा विचार करणारा, महाभारतावरील ललितलेखनाचा परामर्श घेणारा, मध्यवर्ती असणाऱ्या युद्धाचा सर्वांगीण विचार करणारा वगैरे सात लेख सरोज देशपांडे यांचे आहेत. महाभारताचा आशय-विषय, शैली संरचना, श्रद्धा-मूल्ये या सगळ्याचा पुन्हा एकवार विचार करणारा हा एक साक्षेपी प्रयत्न आहे.

विविध पेशांमधल्या लोकांनी केलेले अनेकांगी लेखन हे या संग्रहाचे वैशिष्ट्य आहे. या पुस्तकाचे संकल्पन, संपादन आणि लेखन संस्कृत तज्ज्ञ आणि महाभारत व साहित्यशास्त्र मर्मज्ञ सरोज देशपांडे यांचे आहे.
