About the Book:-Practically the whole of the information which is now available concerning the life and work of the author of this Journal, including an account of the circumstances under which his great Statistical Survey of Bengal was undertaken, and the subsequent history of the manuscripts connected therewith, is to be found in Sir David Prain’s admirable Memoir published in Calcutta in 1905, entitled, “A Sketch of the Life of Francis Hamilton (once Buchanan, sometime Superintendent of the Honourable Company's Botanical Garden, Calcutta. It is therefore unnecessary to attempt a summary here, particularly as Sir D. Pram himself has been good enough to promise a contribution to the Journal of the Bihar and Orissa Research Society on the subject. The original manuscript is in his own handwritings and extends over 224 pages, bound up with other papers in the last of those three volumes of the Buchanan Manuscripts to the Library of the India Office which are concerned with Patna and Gaya. A book on the survey of the antiquities of the districts of Patna and Gaya under taken by the author, who was the superintendent of the Botanical Gardens in Calcutta, from 16th Oct 1811 up till 6th March 1812. The book has charts and illustrations drawn along the way; they include charts of Patna; the route map from Bodhgaya to Rajgir; sections of river flow; a plan of old Rajagriha; and a route map undertaken by the author. About the Author:-Dr Francis Buchanan FRS FRSE FLS FAS FSA DL (1762 – 1829), later known as Francis Hamilton but often referred to as Francis Buchanan-Hamilton, was a Scottish physician who made significant contributions as a geographer, zoologist, and botanist while living in India. He did not assume the name of Hamilton until three years after his retirement from India. The standard botanical author abbreviation Buch-Ham is applied to plants and animals he described; though today the form "Hamilton, 1822" is more usually seen in ichthyology and is preferred by Fishbase. In 1799, after the defeat of Tipu Sultan and the fall of Mysore, he was asked to survey South India, resulting in A Journey from Madras through the Countries of Mysore, Canara and Malabar (1807). He also wrote An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal (1819).He conducted two surveys, the first of Mysore in 1800 and the second of Bengal in 1807–14. From 1803 to 1804, he was surgeon to the governor general of India Lord Wellesley in Calcutta, where he also organized a zoo that was to become the Calcutta Alipore Zoo. In 1804, he was in charge of the Institution for Promoting the Natural History of India founded by Wellesley at Barrackpore.
