About the book:- This book is an account of the extensive tour that the author undertook in the late 1840’s and early 1850’s, with an aim to collect information of the inhabitants. The book is in a series of lectures that the author delivered when he returned home. There are five lengthy lectures in this volume, and they cover the temple, and other monuments of religious importance; lecture two is on the condition of women; three: a description of the Thugs; four: the major festivals; and the last lecture gives specimens from the religious books of the Hindus. The book is profusely illustrated with over 90 engravings. All throughout the book the author illustrates his observations with numerous amusing anecdotes. This book is a reprint of the 1853 edition. About the Author:- Caleb Wright was an English mill owner and Liberal politician in Lancashire, north-west England. The only education he received was by attending night schools. He played the trombone but learned to play the organ in a month so he could replace his father. He donated a site for Chowbent Sunday school next to the chapel. When he was in London he attended Bedford Chapel in Bloomsbury where Stopford Brooke was minister. Aware of his own beginnings, Wright was sympathetic with the workers; he promoted education, self-improvement and the temperance movement. In his home town he was president of the local Mechanics' Institute, campaigned to build the public baths and supported the Ten-Hours Movement to reduce working hours in factories. He became involved in Liberal politics, and became chairman of Tyldesley Local Board. The Title 'India And Its Inhabitants written/authored/edited by Caleb Wright', published in the year 2020.
