About the Book:- The late Dr. Burnell translated Hindu Polity (the ordiances of Manu) from Sanskrit literature. Indian Book has been better known for the last hundred years nearly than the so-called “Laws of Manu,” and many people it is still the decisive authority respecting India. Numerous and important as have been the discoveries in Sanskrit literature during this century. It is chiefly based on references to Manu in Vedas, Brhaspati – Smrti etc. Such as: Whatever Manu said is curative. It is time to explain the real nature of the Manavadharma castra. About the Author:- Arthur Coke Burnell (11 July 1840 – 12 October 1882) was an English civil servant who served in the Madras Presidency who was also a scholar in Sanskrit and Dravidian languages. He catalogued the Sanskrit manuscripts in southern India, particularly those in the collections of the Tanjore court collections. He was, with Henry Yule, a co-compiler of Hobson-Jobson, a compendium of Anglo-Indian terms. In 1874, Burnell published a Handbook of South Indian Palaeography. He published many papers in the Indian Antiquary. He also published on the history of the Portuguese in India. Edward Washburn Hopkins (September 8, 1857 – 1932), American Sanskrit scholar, was born in Northampton, Massachusetts. He graduated at Columbia College in 1878, studied at Leipzig, where he received the degree of Ph.D. in 1881, was an instructor at Columbia (1881–1885), and professor at Bryn Mawr (1885–1895), and became professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology in Yale University in 1895. He became secretary of the American Oriental Society and editor of the Journal of the American Oriental Society, to which he contributed many valuable papers, especially on numerical and temporal categories in early Sanskrit literature.
