Product description
About the Book:-By far the greater number of the articles comprised in these three volumes were written between thirty and forty years ago, several even at a much earlier date, when the study of Sanskrit literature had hardly found more than a few followers yet in Europe. To any one, then, who would compare the present state of research in the field of Indian philology and antiquities with its condition at that early period, in which most of these Essays and Translations originated, it may appear a matter of less surprise that there should be found in them some views and statements at variance with the results of modern science, than that there should be so few of them. The cultivation of Sanskrit by the Scholars of the Continent is no pretended nor unprofitable pursuit: they have not engaged in it merely to acquire the repute of mastering a venerable and difficult language, or to familiarise themselves with a new branch of literature for their private gratification, but they have come forward to exhibit public proofs of their proficiency, and have enriched the community of letters with the spoils of individual research. About the Author:-Horace Hayman Wilson was an English orientalist. He acted for many years as secretary to the committee of public instruction, and superintended the studies of the Sanskrit College in Calcutta. He was one of the staunchest opponents of the proposal that English should be made the sole medium of instruction in native schools, and became for a time the object of bitter attacks. In 1836 he was appointed librarian to the East India Company. He also taught at the East India Company College.Wilson became deeply interested in the ancient language and literature of India, and was the first person to translate the Rigveda into English. In 1813 he published the Sanskrit text with a free translation in English rhymed verse of Kalidasa's lyrical poem, the Meghaduuta, or Cloud-Messenger. He prepared the first Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1819) from materials compiled by native scholars, supplemented by his own researches. This work was only superseded by the Sanskritwörterbuch (1853–1876) of Rudolf Roth and Otto von Böhtlingk, who expressed their obligations to Wilson in the preface to their great work.
