About the Book:-This is a standard work for all who are interested in the study of the far-east, in the ancient and middle of ages. The first volume begins with a lengthy essay on the relations of China with the western world before the discovery of the sea route via the Cape; notices are also given regarding India, central Asia, Arabia, Armenia, Persia etc. It also contains notes on Nestorian Christianity in china. This volume has 2 illustrations. Volume 2 gives a detailed account of Odoric of Pordenone (1316-1330). Volume 2 has 6 illustrations and a map, Volume 3 is on missionary fairs (1292-1338); Rashid ud-din (1300-1307); Pegolotti’s notices (1330-1340); John De Marignolli’s recollections (1338-1353). Volume four describes the journeys of Ibn Battuta to Bengal and China (circa 1347); and, the journey of Benedict Goes from Agra to Cathay (1602-1607); This concluding volume has 1 illustration and a map of the passes of the Hindu Kush. This set. is a reprint of the 1916 edition. About the author:- Sir Henry Yule KCSI CB FRSGS was a Scottish Orientalist and geographer. He published many travel books, including translations of the work of Marco Polo and Mirabilia by the 14th-century Dominican Friar Jordanus. He was also the compiler of a dictionary of Anglo-Indian terms, the Hobson-Jobson, with Arthur Coke Burnell. He was awarded an honorary doctorate (LL.D.) from Edinburgh University in 1884 and served as royal commissioner for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886. He was created Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in 1889. In 1889 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (FRSGS). Yule arrived in Calcutta at the end of 1840. His first posting was in the Khasi Hills, a remote area to the northeast of Bengal in the modern state of Meghalaya. His mission was to establish a practical method of transporting coal to the plains. In this he was unsuccessful but he became fascinated by the region and wrote an account of its people, including the first written description of their living root bridges. In 1842 he was transferred to a team of engineers led by Captain (later General) William Baker charged with the construction of irrigation canals. Their headquarters were at Karnal, 130 km (81 mi) to the north of Delhi.
