दीडशे वर्षापूर्वी कलकत्ता, मुंबई आणि मद्रास येथील विद्यापीठे स्थापन झाली. त्यापूर्वी मुंबई ही देशाची अनभिषिक्त आर्थिक राजधानी झाली होती. मुंबई हे शहर जगाची पूर्वेकडील व्यापारपेठ होती. उद्यमामुळे झालेली आर्थिक प्रगती आणि नामवंत गुरुशिष्यांच्या जोड्यांनी केलेली वैचारिक प्रगती यांच्या सहयोगातून मुंबईत सुधारणा पर्वास प्रारंभ झाला. हाच तो बहुचर्चित प्रबोधन-काळ १८५७ मध्ये मुंबई विद्यापीठाची स्थापना होणे, आणि सर बार्टल फ्रिअरसारख्या धाडसी गव्हर्नरने किल्ल्याची तटबंदी तोडण्याचा १८६० साली निर्णय घेणे हे मुंबई शहराच्या वाढीसाठी उपयुक्त ठरलेले दोन महत्त्वाचे निर्णय. यापुढील विद्यापीठाची आणि शहराची वाढ समांतरच होणार होती. ती कशी झाली, त्यामुळे समाजाचे प्रबोधन होऊन मुंबईने देशस्तरावर सर्वच क्षेत्रांचे नेतृत्व कसे मिळवले… हा सारा रोमहर्षक इतिहास या पानांवर ग्रथित आहे. मुंबईसंबंधी प्रकरण, नंतर विद्यापीठाच्या विकासाच्या आलेखाची काही प्रकरणे असा आकृतिबंध लेखकाने स्वीकारल्याने १९व्या शतकातील शैक्षणिक आणि अन्य घडामोडी आपल्यासमोर घडत आहेत असा आभास होतो, इतका वाचक गुंगून जातो. वाचनीयता हा या इतिहास-लेखनाचा विशेष मानावा लागेल. किंबहुना पक्के संशोधन वाचनीय असू शकत नाही, या गैरसमजाला या ग्रंथाने पुन्हा एकवार छेद दिला आहे. A hundred and fifty years ago, universities were established in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. Before that, Mumbai was the unofficial financial capital of the country. Mumbai was the eastern trading post of the world. A period of reformation began in Bombay with the help of economic progress brought about by enterprise and the ideological progress made by pairs of eminent Gurushishyas. That is the much-celebrated Enlightenment period - the establishment of the Bombay University in 1857, and the decision by a bold governor like Sir Bartle Friar to demolish the fort in 1860 were two important decisions that contributed to the growth of the city of Bombay. Further growth of the university and the city was going to happen in parallel. How it happened, how the society became enlightened and Mumbai got leadership in all sectors at the national level... this whole exciting history is recorded in these pages. The chapter on Bombay, followed by a few chapters on the graph of the university's development, gives the impression that the academic and other developments of the 19th century are unfolding in front of us, leaving the reader engrossed. Readability is the specialty of this history-writing. In fact, this book once again dispels the misconception that solid research cannot be readable.
