About the Book:-Narrative of a voyage undertaken in 1789 and 1790 to the Island of Seychelles and to Trincomale (Ceylon); and further into India to Calcutta (where the author sold his ship), Madras and then to Cochin. The book also notices the state of the French settlements in India, namely, Chandernagore in Bengal and Pondicherry. The book is replete with anecdotes and observance of every day life, the description of monuments, the execution of military exercises. The author devotes space to the fauna esp. horses, elephants and tigers. On his way back he goes via Mocha and Yemen and describes the customs and people of those lands too. This book is a reprint of the 1803 edition. About the Author:-Louis Marie Joseph Ohier de Grandpré (1761 - 1846) was a French navy officer and former slave trader. Between 1789 and 1790, he toured the Indian Ocean, beginning at Île de France (Mauritius), and included visits to India, the Seychelles, Vietnam (then Cochin China), Yemen, and Sri Lanka. He, himself a former slave trader, described violent abuses of African slaves in his Voyage à la côte occidentale d'Afrique published in 1801. In 1787 alone, Grandpré traded 1500 slaves and witnessed "often many cruelties". He served in the Royal Navy for 15 years, after which lived his remaining life at the Hotel des Invalides in Paris.
