Rabindranath Tagore saw himself primarily as a poet. Yet, beyond, his literary legacy, there was another pursuit that defined his life’s purpose—his devotion to education. He regarded his work in this field as his life’s mission, culminating in the establishment of Visva- Bharati University. About Author
Historian and Tagore biographer Uma Das Gupta was educated at Presidency College, Calcutta, and the University of Oxford. She taught at Jadavpur University, Calcutta, and at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. She was Director of the United States Educational Foundation for Eastern India and was a participant of the UNESCO Project titled ‘For A Reconciled Universal: Rabindranath Tagore, Pablo Neruda, Aime Cesaire’. She retired as Professor, Social Sciences Division, Indian Statistical Institute.
