About the Book: - The Author painstakingly prepared this dictionary which is chiefly intended for the use of travellers and others in Persia, and will be found to contain all the words is use in colloquial Persian. With a view to making it available for beginners in the language, and especially for candidates for the Indian Civil Service, all the words in the Gulistan and most of those occurring in other prescribed text-books have also been included. For example, the vowels are to be pronounced as in Italian, except a, which is sounded broad as in the word awe. The consonants except s are pronounced as in English. The book is the product of extensive study of this language. The subject of the book is good and very useful for learners of the Persian language. Though the book is a rare one, it may be recognized even by those who dissent from the author’s point of view. About the Author : - Edward Henry Palmer known as E. H. Palmer, was an English orientalist and explorer. He returned to Cambridge in 1859, almost dying of tuberculosis. He made a miraculous recovery, and in 1860, while he was thinking of a new start in life, fell in with Sayyid Abdallah, teacher of Hindustani at Cambridge, under whose influence he began his Oriental studies. He matriculated at St John's College in November 1863, and in 1867 was elected a fellow on account of his attainments as an orientalist, especially in Persian and Hindustani. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "Palmer's highest qualities appeared in his travels, especially in the heroic adventures of his last journeys. His brilliant scholarship is displayed rather in the works he wrote in Persian and other Eastern languages than in his English books, which were generally written under pressure. His scholarship was wholly Eastern in character, and lacked the critical qualities of the modern school of Oriental learning in Europe. All his works show a great linguistic range and very versatile talent; but he left no permanent literary monument worthy of his powers."
