About the Book:-The author of this rare and valuable discourse has made a noble attempt to unravel the truth behind the Inscriptions on Copper-Plates and Stones in the Nellore District. The book is in three volumes. This set of the collection of the stone and copper plate inscriptions of South India particularly of the Nellore District as it existed in 1903 contains about 903 inscriptions. With one exception no inscriptions subsequent to the eighteenth century have been included otherwise the collection is practically complete. The epigraphical history of the district begins with copper plate No. 24. This is a grant by the Western Chalukyan King Vikramaditya I in the seventh century. It records the gift of a village which has not been identified. Assuming that the grant relates to the Nellore District we find in it an indication of the dispossession of the Pallavas from this part of the east coast by the Western Chalukyan dynasty. These inscriptions are therefore the source material for writing regional history. Volume 1 discusses copper plate and stone inscriptions of Atmakur Taluk Darsi Division Gudur Taluk and Kandukur Taluk. Volume II is devoted to stone inscriptions of Kainigiri Taluk Kavali Taluk Nellore Taluk and Ongole Taluk. Volume III gives a survey of stone inscriptions of Podili Division Rapur Taluk Sulurpet Division Udaygiri Taluk and Venkatagiri Division. The book is good for the historical point of view. About the Author:-Alan Butterworth was born in 1864. He was a British-born author. He joined Indian civil servant during the Colonial British period. He is the author of books such as A Collections of the Inscriptions on Copper-plates and Stones in the Nellore district" (1905); Some Madras Trees (1911); The Southlands of Siva: Some Reminiscences of Life in Southern India; and Memoirs of a Serial Hiller. Venugopal Chetty, Vengal, B.A., I.C.S passed B.A. from Christian College, Madras in 1886. He went to England and joined Christ’s Collge, Cambridge. He joined the I.C.S. as Assistant Collector in 1890. He became Collector and District Magistrate, 1897; Sessions Judge, 1901. He is the author of books Inscriptions in Nellore.
