झूलचा आरंभ नामदेव भोळे आणि चांगदेव पाटील यांच्या आकस्मिक भेटीने होतो. भोळे ज्या कॉलेजात एक वर्षापूर्वी दाखल झालेला आहे, त्या कॉलेजात नव्याने रुजू होण्यासाठी चांगदेव निघालेला आहे. योगायोगाने दोघेही एकाच डब्यातून प्रवास करीत आहेत. दोघांचे जीवनविषयक दृष्टीकोण काहीसे भिन्न असले तरी वृत्तीत बरेच साम्य आहे. त्यामुळे त्यांची मैत्री जुळावयास वेळ लागत नाही. उभायतांतील मैत्रीचा हा धागा झूल कादंबरीच्या आरंभापासून अखेरपर्यंत सलगपणे प्रकट झाला आहे. बौद्धिक चर्चेसाठी प्रश्नांची उलटसुलट बाजू मांडण्यासाठी या उभयतांतील या मैत्रीचा लेखकाने भरपूर उपयोग करून घेतला आहे.
