ययातीची कथा पिढ्यानपिढ्या कलावंतांना साद देत आली आहे. त्या आख्यानातून जीवनाच्या निरनिराळ्या पैलूंविषयी लिहिले गेले आहे. कचाचे देवयानीविषयीचे निरपेक्ष प्रेम हा शिरवाडकरांच्या नाटकाचा मुख्य गाभा आहे. शिरवाडकरांनी या पूर्वी काही रूपांतरित तर काही स्वतंत्र नाटके लिहिली असली तरी, आपल्याला नाट्यलेखनाचा मंत्र ‘ययाती आणि देवयानी’ नाटकाच्या वेळी सापडला, असे लेखक स्वतः मानतात. प्रयोगाच्या निमित्ताने नाटकाला संगीतरूप देण्यात आले. यासंबंधीची हकीकत या आवृत्तीत देण्यात आली आहे, ती फारच मनोरंजक आहे. हे नाटक रंगभूमीवर इतके यशस्वी ठरले की, गेली पन्नास वर्षे ते सातत्याने निरनिराळ्या संचात रंगभूमीवर यशस्वीपणे सादर होत असते. ‘कौंतेय’ आणि ‘ययाती आणि देवयानी’ या दोन नाटकांमधून महाभारतातील कथा नावीन्यपूर्ण रीतीने रंगभूमीवर आणण्याची किमया शिरवाडकरांनी केली आहे. या नाटकात कचाची भूमिका करणारे ज्येष्ठ अभिनेते रामदास कामत यांचा महत्त्वाचा लेखही पुस्तकात समाविष्ट केला आहे. Although Shirwadkar wrote some adapted and some independent plays earlier, the writer himself believes that he found the mantra of drama writing during the play 'Yayati and Devayani'. The play became so successful on the stage that it has been successfully performed on the stage for the last fifty years in different sets. Shirwadkar has done the alchemy of bringing the story of Mahabharata to the stage in two plays 'Kaunteya' and 'Yayati and Devayani' in an innovative manner. The book also includes an important article by veteran actor Ramdas Kamat, who played the role of Kacha in the play.
