महायुद्धोत्तर कालखंडातील नव्या वाड्मयीन युगधर्माचे प्रतिनिधित्व करणारे गंगाधर गाडगीळ हे मराठीतील एक अग्रगण्य कथाकार होत. कथा या साहित्यप्रकाराची संकल्पना ‘नवविणे, ती अधिक खुली करणे हे श्रेय नि:संदिग्धपणे त्यांचे आहे.

गाडगीळांनी आपल्या कथालेखनातून एक नवी कथादृष्टी व्यक्त केली. कथेच्या विविध घटकांच्या स्वरूपात व योजनेत त्यांनी मूलगामी परिवर्तन घडवून आणले, त्यामागचे गमक त्यांच्या कथेतील अनुभवरूपांचे कथार्थाचे अपारंपरिक / नवीन स्वरूप हे आहे. त्यांच्या नवकथेने मराठी साहित्यक्षेत्रात ज्या नव्या वाड्मयीन जाणिवा रुजवल्या, त्यांतून मराठी कथा अधिक मूल्ययुक्त तसेच विविध अंगांनी समृद्ध होण्याच्या शक्यता निर्माण झाल्या. त्यांच्या कथासाहित्यातून प्रकटलेल्या कलादृष्टीचा संस्कार केवळ कथा क्षेत्रापुरता मर्यादित न राहता एकूण मराठी ललित साहित्यावरही तो घडला, असे म्हणणे यथार्थ ठरेल.

गाडगीळांच्या कथेचे महत्त्व केवळ ऐतिहासिक स्वरूपाचे आहे, असे नाही. तिच्यातील कलापूर्णता तसेच मौलिकता स्वतंत्रपणेही लक्षणीय आहे. गाडगीळांच्या कथेचा प्रवास हा कलावंत म्हणून त्यांचा स्वत्वशोध आहे. गंभीरपणे घेतलेला एक मूल्यशोध आहे.

‘वर्षा’ हा संग्रह १९५६ साली प्रथम प्रकाशित झाला होता. त्यानंतर १९८६ साली ‘ओले उन्ह’ या संग्रहातील काही कथा आणि एक-दोन नवीन कथांसह हा संग्रह ‘अमृत’ नावाने प्रकाशित झाला. या आवृत्तीत मूळ ‘वर्षा’ संग्रहातील सर्व कथा आल्या आहेत…. Gangadhar Gadgil Samagra Katha Series : Volume 7

Gangadhar Gadgil was one of the leading storytellers in Marathi, who represented the new revolutionary era of the post-war era. Undoubtedly, he is credited with 'renovating' the concept of the literary form of story, making it more open.

Gadgil expressed a new story vision through his story writing. He made a radical change in the form and scheme of the various elements of the story, the reason behind this is the unconventional / new form of narrative of experiences in his stories. The new sensation which his new story instilled in the field of Marathi literature created possibilities for Marathi stories to become more valuable and enriched with various elements. It would be true to say that the culture of artistic vision manifested through his narratives was not limited to the field of narratives only, but also spread over the entire Marathi fine literature.

The importance of Gadgil's story is not only historical. Her artistry as well as originality is also remarkable independently. The journey of Gadgil's story is his self-discovery as an artist. It is a value proposition taken seriously.

The collection 'Varsha' was first published in 1956. Then in 1986, this collection was published under the name 'Amrit' along with some stories from the collection 'Ole Unh' and one or two new stories. This edition contains all the stories from the original 'Varsha' collection….
