About the book:-The travelogue of the famous African traveler called Ibn Battuta. Setting out in 1325 with the intention of making a pilgrimage to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, he traveled via North Africa and the far East to reach there. Traveling with caravans he, after the pilgrimage was over, traveled all across Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Iran and entered into India via the North West. In India he was attached a qazi in the Tughlaq court and traveled all over India. From then he was sent to China and on the way he visited the Islands of South East Asia. His travels were extensive and it is estimated that he traveled close to 75000 miles. The book is a wealth of information on the state of the countries that he visited, and make for many an hour of entertaining reading. This book is a reprint of the 1929 edition. About the Author:-Ibn Battuta was a Muslim Berber-Moroccan scholar and explorer who widely travelled the Old World, travelling more than any other explorer in history, totaling around 117,000 km (72,000 miles), surpassing Zheng. He with about 50,000 km (30,000 miles) and Marco Polo with 24,000 km (15,000 miles). Over a period of thirty years, Ibn Battuta visited most of the Old World, including Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, China, and the Iberian Peninsula. Near the end of his life, he dictated an account of his journeys, titled A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling, but commonly known as The Rihla.Sir Hamilton Alexander Rosskeen Gibb FBA was a Scottish historian on Orientalism. During World War I, Gibb broke off his studies at the University of Edinburgh to serve for the Royal Artillery of the United Kingdom in France from February 1917 and for several months in Italy as a commissioned officer. He was commissioned at the age of 19. He was awarded a "war privilege" undergraduate Master of Arts (MA) because of his service until the Armistice of 11 November 1918. From 1921 to 1937 Gibb taught Arabic literature at the then School of Oriental Studies, becoming a professor there in 1930. During this time he was an editor of the Encyclopaedia of Islam. Among his students was the British Arabist and Reader in Arabic, James Heyworth-Dunne. In 1937 Gibb succeeded David Samuel Margoliouth as Laudian Professor of Arabic with a Fellowship at St John's College, Oxford, where he stayed for eighteen years.
