Product description
About the Book:-The author reveals that in this rare book, the chapters descriptive of the structure and habits of the wild elephant are reprinted for the sixth time from a larger work, published originally in 1859. Since the appearance of the first edition, many corrections and much additional matter have been supplied to the writer, chiefly from India and Ceylon, and will be found embodied in the following pages. To one of these in particular he feels bound to direct attention. In the course of a more enlarged essay on the zoology of Ceylon, amongst other proofs of a geological origin for that island, distinct from that of the adjacent continent of India, as evidenced by peculiarities in the flora and fauna of each respectively. Through the survey work of Temminck a new species was added in this version, to which the natives give the name of 'gadjahf'. This species is perfectly intermediate between the Indian and African, especially in the shape of the skull, and will certainly put an end to the distinction between Elephas and Loxodon. The book is the product of extensive research of the species. The author has preserved the fine illustrations from oblivion which he considers his pious duty in the interest of the script. The book is certainly an indispensable one for the students, researchers and readers. About the Author:-Sir James Emerson Tennent, 1st Baronet FRS, born James Emerson, was a British politician and traveller born in Ireland. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 5 June 1862. He was knighted and appointed colonial secretary of Ceylon in 1845, where he remained till 1850. While he was there, an economic depression in the United Kingdom severely affected the local coffee and cinnamon industry. Planters and merchants clamoured for a reduction of export duties. Tennent therefore recommended to Earl Grey, Secretary of State for Colonies in London that taxation should be radically shifted from indirect taxation to direct taxation, which proposal was accepted. It was decided to abolish the export duties on coffee and reduce the export duty on cinnamon leaving a deficit of £40,000 Sterling which was to be met by direct taxes on the people. This was one of the causes of the Matale Rebellion of 1848. Tennent wrote Belgium in 1840 (1841), and Wine: its Duties and Taxation (1855), Sketches of the Natural History of Ceylon (1861), The Wild Elephant and The Method Of Capturing It in Ceylon (1867), and was a contributor to magazines and a frequent correspondent of Notes and Queries. He is commemorated in the scientific name of a species of Sri Lankan lizard, Ceratophora tennentii.
