Since, however, the articles on Marathi proverbs gave, when published, some offence to Deccani readers, he takes this opportunity of assuring them that the suggestion that Maharashtra means the country of the Mahars (Mahar Rashtra) was not mine at all. He is glad, however, to state that his old and valued friend Sir Ramkrishna Bhandarkar, C.I.E., has convinced him that Malesworth’s derivation must on philological grounds be incorrect. He has rewritten the latter half of the articles; the other articles are practically unaltered.
