About the Book:-This work is volume XXVII of the Sacred Books of the East series. This Volume contain I-X chapters of Li ki. The present is the first translation that has been published in any European language of the whole of the Li Ki. In 1853, the late J. M. Callery published at the Imprimerie Toyale turin what he called Li Ki or Memorial des Rites, Translated for the first time from Chinese and accompanied by notes, commentaries, and the original text but in fact the text which P. Calley adopted was only an expurgated edition published by Fan tze-tang a scholar of the Yuan dynasty. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. James Legge (1815 –1897) was a Scottish linguist, missionary, sinologist, and translator who was best known as an early translator of Classical Chinese texts into English. Legge served as a representative of the London Missionary Society in Malacca and Hong Kong (1840–1873) and was the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford University (1876–1897). In association with Max Muller he prepared the monumental Sacred Books of the East series, published in 50 volumes between 1879 and 1891. He was born at Huntly, Aberdeenshire. He enrolled in Aberdeen Grammar School at age 13 and then King's College, Aberdeen at age 15. He then continued his studies at Highbury Theological College, London. He was appointed headmaster of Ying Wa College in Malacca in 1839 and continued in that position until 1867, the college having removed to Hong Kong in 1844.
