About the Book:-A collection of miniatures of the Mogul emperors, some of which are copied in this book. The accounts of these unfamiliar personages which are given in the ordinary books of reference he found to be inadequate and frequently incorrect. Accordingly, he devoted the spare hours of a long and harassing winter to reading the original memoirs of the native historians of India and the accounts of early ambassadors and travellers to the court of the Great Moguls. A few of these he wrote out in brief, and they were printed in various periodicals. To those who have lived or travelled in India, the subject of this book will be more or less familiar, since the jurisprudence, customs, and architecture of the Mogul emperors have left remains which still serve to recall their authors. But even to us, who are so far removed in time and in temper, it is not without interest to study the characters of the kings who ruled India for three eventful centuries; and it is chiefly to the latter class of readers that this book is addressed. He emphasizes the fact that its chapters are not intended to give the history of the reigns in question, but rather to present such views of the chief personages involved as an intelligent reader of the histories themselves might wish to carry away. It contains a portrait and 15 illustrations to make it more interesting. About the Author:-Edward Singleton Holden was an American astronomer and the fifth president of the University of California. He was president of the University of California from 1885 until 1888, and the first director of the Lick Observatory from 1888 until the end of 1897. He resigned as a result of internal dissent over his management among his subordinates. While at the Lick Observatory, he was the founder of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and its first president (1889–1891).
