About the Book: The author believes that this book is culturally and socially important in the context of Cochin. The topography of Cochin is a highly, cultivated, populous, and beautiful territory, lying along the northern bank of the Purreeaar river. The late General Cullen, who for nearly twenty years, ably held the post of British Resident, and was intimately acquainted with the people, their manners, customs and laws. To understand its past and to know its present, it’s important to know the memorials of the Dutch Governors of Cochin, and some of their secret records, which give an insight into the policy and their relationship with the neighboring states. The elaboration of personal intercourse with Namboorie Brahmans, and other Hindus, with the view of facilitating enquiries into Hinduism, as it now exists in the area. Apart from this the early history of Malabar is also discussed along with the flora and fauna of Cochin. The subject of the book is very interesting and it will provide ample scope to satiate the desire of the researchers and analyst. About the Author: - Francis Day CIE was an army surgeon and naturalist in the Madras Presidency who later became the Inspector-General of Fisheries in India and Burma. A pioneer ichthyologist, he described more than three hundred fishes in the two-volume work on The Fishes of India. He also wrote the fish volumes of the Fauna of British India series. He was also responsible for the introduction of trout into the Nilgiri hills, for which he received a medal from the French Societe d'Acclimatation. Many of his fish specimens are distributed across museums with only a small fraction deposited in the British Museum (Natural History Museum, London), an anomaly caused by a prolonged conflict with Albert Günther, the keeper of zoology there.
