Product description
About the Book:-The book is the narrative which follows is concerned with a part of the travels made by the Augustinian friar, Sebastiao Manrique . Fascinating story of a 17th century Augustinian missionary who sets out from Goa to convert the people of Arakan, an independent territory on the Bay of Bengal, now within Burma's borders. The first 90 pages that chronicle the story of the Portuguese in Portuguese Asia and especially 'Golden Goa' are a good introduction to the subject. Manrique travelled to many other places besides Arakan, but it is with his visit to that Court that we shall be chiefly concerned. No other 17th century writer has left us so detailed and intimate a description of an oriental king raised so many questions of interest. It is a lively account of all that he experienced and saw there and contains a description of the court of the king there. The book has 32 chapters, 4 illustrations and 4 plans and a map of Arakan. About the Author:-Maurice Stewart Collis was an administrator in Burma (Myanmar) when it was part of the British Empire, and afterwards a writer on Southeast Asia, China and other historical subjects. He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1911 and was posted to Burma in 1912. He had postings at Sagaing and elsewhere. In 1917, the British army raised a Burmese brigade with which Collis went to Palestine, but he saw no action. In the 1920s he was district commissioner in Arakan. In 1929–1930, a period when relations between Burmese, Indians and British became particularly difficult, he was district magistrate in Rangoon. This period is narrated in his memoir Trials in Burma. After returning to England in 1934, he wrote many books, including Siamese White and Foreign Mud, as well as art and literary criticism. At the age of 65 he turned his hand to painting.
