About the book:-A collection of 12 essays that intend to give a sketch, in broad outline, of the origin of the Bengali language and the various influences, linguistic, ethnic, social, that shaped and moulded its earlier history. Following an introduction, the next three are titled Ancient Bengal and its peoples and they discuss a) the antiquity of the names Vanga and Bangala; b) the geography of old Bangala and of other related tracts; c) Ganda, Radha and Banga. Lecture 5 is on the influence of the Dravidian speeches on Bengali; lecture 6 is on Bengali Phonology; lecture 7, 8, 9 are about the factors relating to phonology and accent; lecture 10 is on how Chandasa is related to later Aryan speeches; lectures 11 discusses Pali and other old Prakrtas and lecture 12 is about the literary Prakrtas. The author was lecturer in the departments of comparative Phonology, Anthropology and Indian Vernaculars in the Calcutta University. This book is a reprint of the 1920 edition. About the Author:- Bijay Chandra Majumdar was born in 1861 in West Bengal, India. He was a poet, writer, translator, linguist, historian, archaeologist, and anthropologist. He knew Sanskrit, Pali, Tamil, Telugu, Bangla, and English well. He did a variety of jobs. He was legal adviser to the Raja of Sonarpur in Orissa, teacher of the Puri Zila School (1887), headmaster of Sambalpur Zila School (1891), lawyer at Sambalpur and Calcutta High Courts, and professor of anthropology at the University of Calcutta. Bijay Chandra was a well-known poet, and specially skilled in writing satirical poems. His collections of poems include Kavita (Poems, 1889), Yugapuja (Era Worship, 1892), Phulashar (The Flowery Dart, 1904), Yajvabhasma (Ashes of rituals, 1904), and Pavchakamala (1910). He edited three magazines, Vabgavani (Voice of Bengal, 1923-27), Shishusathi (Children’s Companion, 1928-32) and Bangla (1932) all published from Kolkata.
