About the Book :-The Tamilian-Antiquary was a journal edited by D Savariroyan, and was published between 1907-and 1914. It is a reprint of the classic 1907 original work on South Indian culture and civilization covering Andhra Pradesh and Nizam’s Hyderabad, Karnataka and Mysore, Malabar and Travancore, Tamil Nadu and Madras Presidency, South India and Dravidian India. The complete set is in 12 thin volumes. The set contains many erudite articles on various well-known and not so well-known aspects of southern India. Volume one contains articles on: Bharat land or ‘Dravidian India'; the solar and lunar races; Volume two contains a lengthy dissertation on the critical review of the story of the Ramayana, and an account of south Indian castes. Volume three contains a descriptive article on: some milestones of Tamil Literature, Volume four contains articles on Manikka Vacagar and his date; and on the early Christians of Malabar. Volume five has notices on: glimpses of ancient Dravidians; the Augustan age of Tamil literature; the ten Tamil idylls; and lastly, Dravidian kingdoms. Volume six offers observations on: Pura-Porul - 'The Objective': a summarised account of Pura-Porul Venba Malai; and, selections translated from the 400 lyrics Pure Nanuru. Volume seven has dissertations on: Valmiki Ramayana and south Indian sociology, and south Indian castes at the time of the Ramayana. Volume eight notices: the Dravidian kingdoms; conquest of Bengal and Burma by the Tamils; distribution of races around the Persian gulf; representative institutions in southern India 1000 years ago; Pura Nanuru – a lament; serpent worship in India; and, the ancient Dravidian industries and commerce. Volume nine has articles on: Dravidian kingdoms and list of Pandiyan coins. Volume ten is a detailed study on the origin of the Tamil Vellalas. Volume Eleven has a collection of various articles, the list of which are: an old tradition preserved; a note on the Sangam periods; the antiquity of Nanjinad and Shenkottah (two Tamil districts of Travancore); Sage Pavanandhi; Dravidian coins; the Kural; a chapter from the Kural; the Tamils in the epic age, Lanka and the Tamil Sangams; and, Pandiyan coins. This volume has 4 plates. Volume twelve, the last in this set, has studies on: the Cholas and their coinage; the origin of the word 'Arya'; the Canarese war; the Tamil proverbs; St. Thomas in India; and Vibhisinan Buddhi.
