माणूस समजून घ्यायचा प्रयत्न करणे, त्याच्या सुख-दुःखामागची कारणमीमांसा जाणून घ्यायचा प्रयत्न करणे हाच आपल्या लेखनामागचा उद्देश आहे, असे पाडगांवकरांनी अनेकदा म्हटले आहे. आपल्या कवितेमधून हा शोध ते घेतच आले पण गद्य लेखनातूनही त्यांनी हा शोध सातत्याने घेतला असे दिसेल. कधी व्यक्तिचित्रणात्मक लेखनाच्या रूपाने, कधी मुलाखतींच्या रूपाने. ‘स्नेहगाथा’ वाचताना याचे वारंवार प्रत्यंतर येईल.
