हिंदी साहित्य में प्रेमचंद का अपना विशिष्ट स्थान है। वह बीसवीं सदी के उन लेखकों में से हैं, जिन्होंने अपनी रचनाओं में यथार्थ की जीती-जागती तसवीर पाठकों के सामने रखी। उनकी अधिकांश रचनाएँ ग्रामीण भारत की पृष्ठभूमि में लिखी गई हैं। प्रेमचंद का जन्म 31 जुलाई, 1880 को लमही नामक गाँव में हुआ था। उनका पूरा नाम 'धनपत राय श्रीवास्तव' था। सबसे पहले उन्होंने 'नवाबराय' उपनाम से अपनी रचनाएँ लिखीं। बाद में उन्होंने 'प्रेमचंद' उपनाम से लिखा। प्रेमचंद की प्रसिद्ध पुस्तकें सेवासदन, गोदान, गवन, रंगभूमि, प्रतिज्ञा आदि हैं। 'सेवासदन' हिंदी में प्रकाशित होने वाला प्रथम उपन्यास था। प्रेमचंद ने उपन्यास के अतिरिक्त सैकड़ों कहानियाँ भी लिखीं। 8 अक्टूबर, 1936 को उनका देहांत हो गया।
