احمد فراز کا اصل نام سید احمد شاہ ہے۔ 12 جنوری 1931 کو ان کی پیدائش کوہاٹ میں ہوئی۔ مادری زبان پشتو ہونے کے باوجود انہوں نے اردو کو اپنی اظہار کا ذریعہ بنایا اور “فراز” تخلص اختیار کیا۔انہوں نے پیشاور یونیورسٹی سے اردو و فارسی میں ایم اے کیا اور وہیں تدریسی خدمات بھی انجام دیں۔ ان کی شاعری میں محبت کی نزاکت کے ساتھ سماجی ناانصافی کے خلاف آواز بھی ملتی ہے۔مارشل لا کے خلاف مؤقف اختیار کرنے کی وجہ سے انہیں جلاوطنی اختیار کرنا پڑی، مگر واپسی کے بعد انہوں نے اکیڈمی آف لیٹرس اور نیشنل بک فاؤنڈیشن جیسی ادبی اداروں کی قیادت کی۔25 اگست 2008 کو اسلام آباد میں ان کا انتقال ہوا۔ فراز آج بھی اپنی مؤثر اور حساس شاعری کے لیے یاد کیے جاتے ہیں۔

About the Author (English)

Ahmad Faraz’s real name is Syed Ahmad Shah. He was born on 12 January 1931 in Kohat. Despite his mother tongue being Pashto, he chose Urdu as his medium of expression and adopted the pen name “Faraz.”He completed his M.A. in Urdu and Persian from University of Peshawar and also taught there. His poetry reflects the delicacy of love along with a voice against social injustice.Due to his opposition to martial law, he had to face exile, but after returning, he led institutions like the Academy of Letters and the National Book Foundation.He passed away on 25 August 2008 in Islamabad. Faraz is still remembered for his powerful and sensitive poetry.
