पीठ पीछे का आँगन' आज दिन-भर रुक-रुक कर, चाव और प्यार से, पढ़ता रहा और तुम्हारी कलाकारी से अभिभूत होता रहा। पिछले तीन-चार सालों में शायद ही किसी उपन्यास को मैंने इतने प्यार से पढ़ा हो। पहले वाक्य ने ही मुझे जकड़ लिया : 'अन्तहीन काली ऊन'। अँधेरे को ऐसी अनूठी उपमा शायद ही किसी और ने दी हो। मैंने पढ़ते हुए इतने निशान लगाए हैं, इतने वाक्य के नीचे लकीरें खींची हैं कि कोई देखे तो हैरान हो। ज़ाहिर है कि मैं तुम्हारे इस उपन्यास से बहुत प्रभावित, बहुत आश्वस्त, बहुत चमत्कृत हुआ हूँ। पहले उपन्यास (‘अँधेरी खिड़कियाँ’) में जो सम्भावनाएँ थीं, इसमें वे साकार हो गई हैं। सबसे अधिक मैं इस बात से प्रभावित हूँ कि तुम सारे उपन्यास में बहुत संयत हो—और तुमने एक तरह से (फिर) स्थापित कर दिया है कि उपन्यास में अमूर्तन सम्भव ही नहीं, सुन्दर भी हो सकता है, कि प्रयोग अराजकता का पर्याय नहीं, कि 'प्रयोगवादी' उपन्यास भी उपन्यास ही है—साधारण यथार्थ के बग़ैर, भाषा और शिल्प के सहारे, आन्तरिकता के सहारे, मानवीय लाचारियों के सहारे...
कहने का मतलब यह कि तुमने अपने इस काम से मुझे प्रभावित ही नहीं किया, मोह भी लिया।

Sabse adhik main is baat se prbhavit hun ki tum sare upanyas mein bahut sanyat ho—aur tumne ek tarah se (phir) sthapit kar diya hai ki upanyas mein amurtan sambhav hi nahin, sundar bhi ho sakta hai, ki pryog arajakta ka paryay nahin, ki pryogvadi upanyas bhi upanyas hi hai—sadharan yatharth ke bagair, bhasha aur shilp ke sahare, aantarikta ke sahare, manviy lachariyon ke sahare. . . Kahne ka matlab ye ki tumne apne is kaam se mujhe prbhavit hi nahin kiya, moh bhi liya.
