Outcasts on the Margins: Exclusion and Discrimination of Scavenging Communities in Education

About The Book: Attaining education has been established to be critical for empowering children and youth of any community. However, educational opportunities for the children in the scavenging community are still inaccessible; enrollment as well as retention rate of these children in schools is very low across India. This book documents and analyses the systemic exclusion and discrimination of children of scavenging castes in the education system from the perspective of the marginalized scavenging communities commonly known as Safaikarmis. Based on extensive survey of scavenging communities of twelve states, this book is an eye-opener to the Government, policymakers, civil society and mainstream society so that men and women of goodwill may strive to bring about social transformation to ensure that no citizen and no child in India experiences such systemic exclusion and discrimination in pursuing their education and in fulfilling their dreams for a better future for them individually, for the community and for the nation.
